Nick Johnson, Yankees Near One Year Contract Agreement
Nick Johnson is moving forward with The Yankees on a one-year contract agreement. The left-handed hitter has drawn interest from the Mariners and Giants to play first base, but the position is not available to him because the Yankee already have Mark Teixeira on the post. According to NYPost, Johnson, 31 would replace Hideki Matsui, who signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Angels. Johnson’s extensive injury history, where he missed all of the 2000 and 2007 season, and appeared in 73 games in 2004 and was out for 63 games in 2003 is expected to include incentive clauses.
If Johnny Damon doesn’t return, Johnson could hit second between Derek Jeter and Teixeira. It is reported that he would play power numbers when playing in Yankee Stadium to cover his lack of speed.
